tomorrow is monday, it will be my 6th shift for the week and my 3rd last day to complete my J Odyssey application.

i've been working like mad to get this thing as perfect as possible. it's been really interesting just to research and i've had to change my statement saying where i want to go and why a couple of times now.

originally i wanted to go from Finland to Ugande as they have the most and least nurses, respectively. but i changed my mind as i started to research and now it's not just a quest to look at hospitals, but i want to have a look at the social, political and religious differences between places.

where i want to go, their amount of nurses per 100,000 people, and why i want to go there:

- Norway (2065): to visit my Norwegian housemates and the hospital where one of them works, to eat some elk stew, to travel north by train to the Lofoten Islands, to (maybe) see the Northern Lights, to look lustily at tall Norwegian boys in suits

- Cuba (744*): see Communism in action, to drink lots of Bicardi, to check out Santeria (kinda like voodoo!), to (maybe) check out Guantanamo Bay

- South Africa (388): to visit my friend Drew, to check out his missionary work, to examine the effects of aparthied

- Sierra Leone (33): to work with Medecins sans Frontieres and/or Mercy Ships, to look at the gem trade

- Libera (6): to look at the Mercy Ships 'floating hospital' that will be docked there, to look at a place rebuilding after civil war

after working here in a remote area of Australia i've seen things that i would've thought couldn't exist in a country like this, one that is supposedly 1st world. so how do we really compare against a country rated 'the safest in the world' like Norway, to a country struggling to rebuild with non-existant services like Liberia?

*around the same amount as Australia

I'm so impressed. I would love to work overseas with Mercy Ships or something like that but I have to admit that the idea scares me too.

Good luck with the application!! It looks like a wonderful opportunity if you win the comp. The first week they were advertising it on triple J - I was dreaming of where I would go in the world on a 'food odyssey'. Not so much a food odyssey where I wank on like a food critic but more looking at the have and have nots and the issues with getting safe food and water to different parts of zee globe. But as you can see - did not come to fruition. My enthusiasm died.

I hope you get it!!! :)

I'd love to visit all of those places, but I doubt I'd do very well working there. I'm not even a fan of working in outback Australia.

The city wards do me just fine :S

excellent theme for your odyssey. good luck for the judging. you will win over my mission to stop wondering about random things in our world.

I found the application writing easier than the stupid audition tape. the number of times I filmed it was insane. and editing, agh, don't get me started. iMovie is not as reliable as I remember. oh well, done now thank God.

good luck again.

my application sending process was one of the most stressful things i've ever done - on tuesday i discovered that if i sent it all that day via express post it wouldn't arrive in sydney until mon/tue next week.
so i made one copy to send with someone flying to perth on wednesday (finishing the editing in the car on the way to the airport, realising later some of the audio was missing) and emailed another copy to to my boyfriend in sydney for him to post. according to auspost the copy sent from perth has arrived, yay!

the only problem was that i didn't read the terms & conditions closely enough - 500 word limit on the application? oops...
